What is ADSL?
ADSL transforms an ordinary PSTN telephone line into a high speed data line, able to carry data up to 40 times faster than a conventional modem. It works by splitting the available bandwidth on a line in to two channels; one channel for voice calls, and a data channel for high speed internet connection.
Typically end-users not only demand the high speed split access, but mainly the access to the service that has predominately driven the development of broadband to date- the internet. Fundamentally ADSL provides a mechanism for delivering cost effective internet connectivity, proving itself to be a true replacement of leased lines and other internet access methods.
ADSL Vs SDSL
As compared to SDSL, ADSL has the distinguishing characteristic that the data can flow faster in one direction than the other, i.e., asymmetrically. ADSL is typically used as a service for consumers and business to connect to the Internet in a relatively passive mode: able to use the higher speed direction for the "download" from the Internet, but not needing to run servers that would require bandwidth in the other direction. ADSL upstream bandwidth is always limited to 256 kbps. The ability to continue to use "narrowband" voice services, such as a plain voice call, is retained when using ADSL, unlike SDSL which requires a dedicated PSTN line.
SDSL
SDSL is a technology that can provide an end-user with the ability to download and upload data at the same throughput rate – synchronously as opposed to asynchronously as is the case with ADSL. The service is provided over a dedicated metallic path (installed by a BT Openreach engineer) which supports only the SDSL service – the full bandwidth of the line is required to deliver SDSL. Unlike with ADSL, a standard PSTN telephone service cannot be supported over the same line.
SDSL is currently available in 750 exchanges in and around the UK. For an up to date list and roll-out

INTERNET SERVICES
The Just Telecomms ADSL service comes bundled with internet services and a number of standard features, as shown below.
| Standard Features |
Optional Features |
| End-User Control Panel |
Domain Name Registration |
| E-mail - 7 POP3 or IMAP mailboxes |
Domain Name Self Management |
| SMTP Relay |
Routed IP Addressing |
| Single Fixed or Dynamic IP Address |
Additional mailboxes |
End-User Control Panel
Each end-user can be given access to a control panel through which they can manage the internet services provided as a part of the ADSL service. The panel, which can be used by the IT Manager or Network Administrator, is accessed via a log-in page branded in line with your Company identity and which could typically be reached using a hyperlink from your main web site.
The control panel allows the end-user to:
" Set and manage e-mail accounts
" Access web-mail account (viewing e-mails directly from the e-mail server)
" Manage their Domain Name Service (advanced optional)
" Modify personal details and update/change passwords
E-mail
2 e-mail collection protocols are supported - POP3 and IMAP. Both protocols allow network based e-mail services to be integrated with E-mail programme's such as Outlook and Outlook Express. All e-mail accounts are set up via the end-user control panel (a set up wizard is available for Outlook Express) and can be managed through the panel by the end-user's IT Manager. Where the wizard is not used the system provides all necessary information required to complete the set up of the E-mail program - POP3 or IMP, SMTP and NNTP Server Names and Ports, and log in details. All e-mail accounts and folders can also be accessed via a Webmail function - useful if a user is not at their work computer.
SMTP relay
All Just Telecomms ADSL installations support SMTP relay irrespective of whether or not an end-user requires a full e-mail service.
E-mail Boxes
Each end-user will be given 7 e-mail boxes as standard, with an option to purchase further mailboxes.
Catch All Mailbox
The Catch All function allows improperly addressed e-mail sent to an end-user domain to be redirected to a generic e-mail address. An improperly addressed e-mail is defined as an e-mail message sent to an undefined e-mail account on an existing domain.
E-mail Forwarding
For each e-mail box set up, through their control panel, the end-user can activate an e-mail forwarding service, which specifies an alternate e-mail address to which all received e-mails are redirected. This functionality is particularly useful for end-users who will be away from their work computer, but still need to receive e-mails sent to their work address.
Web mail
This account can be accessed by the end-user through logging in to their control panel account. Each account, as standard on a per line basis (not e-mail account), has an address book and multiple folder support and management. Once an end-user is authenticated and logged in to their control panel, they can fully manage their account and access any e-mail account set up without requiring a second level of authentication.
Virus Filtering
The e-mail service comes with Virus Filters as standard.
Fixed and Routed IP Addressing
Fixed IP and routed IP addressing is available. A fixed IP address is assigned to the router WAN interface. Routed IP addresses are used where the end-user wishes to enable the devices behind a router to be directly accessible from the internet - a file server or web server for example.
One fixed IP address comes as standard with all products.
Domain Name Service
Registration
End-users e-mail must be provided in conjunction with a domain name (e.g. yourname.com). The Just Telecomms service allows an end-user to request and register a domain name of choice. This is done via Nominet and Bulk Register.
Re-point
End-users may also re-point their existing domain name to the Just Telecomms DNS Servers, enabling them to make use of the e-mail facilities and web space provided. The transfer of existing domain name billing is not supported.
Sub-Domain
Alternatively the customer can use a sub-domain (based on the domain name you use for the service- e.g. JOHN.yourname.com).
Once the end-user's domain has been established, e-mail accounts and web hosting can be set up against them.
DNS Management
As an advanced feature you can manage your own DNS set up. This resides in the users control panel when activated, and is built on a point-click basis.
